There’s Something About Lee
Richard Nixon once said that if it hadn’t been for her, there wouldn’t have been a Watergate.
He wasn’t referring to the ubiquitous Deep Throat; he meant Martha Mitchell. The “Mouth of the South” wife of then-Attorney General John Mitchell who went down in flames for his role in the Watergate saga.
Martha Mitchell was a tragic figure whose infamous, midnight phone calls to reporters became the talk of Washington. Back then, she was widely derided as delusional and a lush; she provided the comic relief in an otherwise tawdry tale.
Yet poor, befuddled Martha had the last laugh when many of her allegations were subsequently proved true. Martha had long been known for her scissor like tongue, and this poem was written in her high school yearbook. Who could have guessed how prescient it would prove to be:
“I love its gentle warble,
I love its gentle flow,
I love to wind my tongue up
And I love to let it go.”

In the bizarre story of John Edwards and Rielle Hunter and its peripheral players, trial attorney Lee Rohn of St. Croix may turn out to be the Martha Mitchell in this curious tale. The National Enquirer reported (and Rohn vehemently denied) that Hunter initially stayed at Rohn’s oceanfront manse.
The selection of Hunter's hideaway is an odd choice, considering that Rohn is currently on trial--after many appeals and delays--for felony possession of a controlled substance with intent to distribute.
In March of 2003, airport drug scanners found marijuana in her tennis shoe. When apprised of this discovery, officials testified that Rohn asked them to “look the other way”. She finally admitted that the drug was for her boyfriend’s sick father (the Good Samaritan defense?).
Still, it’s curious that Rohn would pop up in this story. Or maybe not, given her connection to Edwards (more about that later).
Rohn and controversy seem to go hand in hand. Back in 1982, in Austin, Texas, Rohn was arrested for cocaine possession, but a grand jury declined to indict due to “insufficient evidence”. Litigious by nature and not merely by profession, records show that while representing a client in a slip and fall case against Wal-Mart, the opposing counsel asked the court to sanction Rohn for using the F-bomb and other unseemly, injudicious conduct.
Now housed and practicing in St. Croix, Rohn’s critics have alleged “a wide spectrum of professional conduct violations” such as “judge shopping”. Rohn has sued one company (Innovative Communications Corp. and its subsidiaries, which include the local newspaper) over 25 times. In turn, Rohn has become a gadfly in the judicial ointment, going so far as to accuse one district judge, Thomas Moore, of “inappropriate behavior on the bench.” Rohn and Moore have a long history; in 1999, Moore sanctioned Rohn for her use of profanity and improper behavior toward other attorneys and expert witnesses. (Guess he won’t be inviting her to his next birthday gala).
So, how in the heck did Rielle Hunter supposedly come to stay at Lee Rohn’s pad?
Apparently Lee Rohn is a “very good friend” and colleague of--you don’t say?--John Edwards.
Talk about six degrees of separation. In the summer of 2006, Lee Rohn received an award from the American Association for Justice (Rohn is also a former and present Board of Governor). The keynote speaker for the event was John Edwards.
In a double play for the ages, then-New York Attorney General--and now disgraced Ex-Governor--Eliot Spitzer received the Community Champion Award “for his leadership fight against those who commit consumer fraud, as well as his battle against corruption on behalf of all the citizens of the United States.”
I bet that must have made for some interesting…small talk?

Timing is everything.
Just hours after assuming the post of Governor of New York, Democrat David Paterson admitted to the New York Daily Post that he had an affair with a woman for "2 or 3 years" and that his liasons occurred at the West Side Days Inn in Manhattan.
We're still scratching our heads over this one, how could Paterson not remember how long the affair lasted?
That's not all. Paterson's wife also admitted to having an affair during a "rough patch in their marriage".
Paterson told the New York Daily News that not only did he meet up with his paramour at the Days Inn but that his staff, he was a state senator up in Albany at the time, also stayed at the same hotel when visiting the city. When the Daily News asked Paterson if he had stayed with anyone else at the Days Inn since the end of his "affair" in 2001 he replied that he took his wife there.
"From time to time I used to take Michelle to that hotel."According to the Daily News when a marriage counselor recommended to the couple to "introduce new and exciting things into their marriage" Paterson said they chose the Days Inn because not only were they "trying to rekindle the romance in their marriage" but that the hotel was convenient, merely "four subway stops" from Paterson's Harlem office.
Paterson denied using government funds to pay for his hotel stays but the Daily News found this intriguing piece of a puzzle:
Records show that in September 2001, then-Sen. Paterson's campaign spent $456.46 for two nights at what was then called the Quality Hotel at 215 W. 94th St.We wondered why a staff member's stay at a hotel would be referred to as "office expenses" on the then state Senator's checks to the former Quality Hotel now called the West Side Days Inn.
One check was dated Sept. 10 — the day before the 9/11 attacks — and the other Sept. 24. Both are listed as "office" expenses.
In an earlier interview with the Daily News, Paterson mentioned that his campaign paid for a staffer to stay at the hotel around the time of 9/11.

Eliot Spitzer resigned as Governor of New York today, his wife, Silda Wall Spitzer, at his side. Now we have so-called "experts" weighing in, judging not only Spitzer's behavior but that of his wife for "standing by her man."
Spitzer had been caught up in a federal wiretap prostitution sting where it was revealed that as "Client - 9", Spitzer had spent thousands of dollars for high class hookers, dropping $4300 for two hours with a petite brunette called "Kristen", an Emperor's Club call girl at a Washington, D.C. hotel, on the night before Valentines Day.
Investigators hinted that Spitzer had spent close to $80,000 over an extended period of time.
Today his wife stood next to him as he gave his resignation speech at his Midtown Manhattan office.
“From those to whom much is given, much is expected,” Mr. Spitzer said. “I have been given much: the love of my family, the faith and trust of the people of New York and the chance to lead this state. I am deeply sorry that I did not live up to what was expected of me.”While most have focused on the swift and sudden downfall of Spitzer, it was his wife's actions, that of standing next to her husband while he announced his decision to resign, that some "experts" chose to focus on.
“Over the course of my public life, I have insisted — I believe correctly — that people regardless of their position or power take responsibility for their conduct,” he said. “I can and will ask no less of myself. For this reason, I am resigning from the office of governor.” Source - New York Times
The public reaction to Mrs. Wall Spitzer’s stance to “stand by her man” has been mixed at best, New York Magazines notes . Political blog from N. Dakota, “Say Anything” , said it would have paid to see Silda Spitzer punch her husband on the podium.
Others were not as generous. “What’s more disgusting than a lyin’ no good, cheatin, hypocritical, political man? Their wives that stand by looking dumbfounded as their unfaithful husbands apologize to the public. Do these women have no pride?” wrote New York City Moms blog. Dr. Laura went so far as to blame Mrs. Wall Spitzer for the scandal. Source - Reuters
We took a spin over to see just what Dr. Laura's "diagnosis" was, as a guest on The Today Show, as to why Spitzer cheated on his wife:
Dr. Laura: “When the wife does not focus in on the needs and the feelings, sexually, personally, to make him feel like a man, to make him feel like a success, to make him feel like her hero, he’s very susceptible to the charm of some other woman making him feel what he needs."
Meredith Viera: “You’re saying the women should feel guilty that they somehow drove the man to cheat?”
"Dr" Laura: “The cheating was his decision to repair what’s damaged and to feed himself where he’s starving,” Schlessinger explained. “But, yes, I hold women responsible for tossing out perfectly good men by not treating them with the love and kindness and respect and attention they need.”
There you have it, according to Dr. Laura, it's not Eliot Spitzer's fault he cheated and spent thousands of dollars on high class hookers but his wife's fault for not "loving" him enough, not showing him the "kindness and respect" he "deserved."

Looking back on Dr. Laura's Unofficial bio it's very apparent why Dr. Laura believes what she told Meredith Viera on The Today Show as to why it was Spitzer's wife's fault that he was driven to use high class call girls.

Schlessinger married a dentist when she was 25, and had at least two extramarital affairs before they were divorced. Her first radio appearance was in 1974, as a caller on Bill Ballance's show in Los Angeles. She became a regular caller, and later a guest on Ballance's show, as he became her mentor in radio, and her first known extramarital affair.
According to the bio and numerous other sources, Dr. Laura met her next lover and now current husband, a professor and married father of three, in 1985:
While still married to that dentist (and still ostensibly a marriage therapist), Schlessinger met and began another extramarital affair with Lewis G. Bishop, a professor of neuro-physiology and married father of three. They lived together for nine years after divorcing their spouses, and have been married since 1985.
If we follow Dr. Laura's "logic", if her current husband's ex-wife had given him the love, respect, and kindness he deserved then he wouldn't have flown to the arms of... Dr. Laura.
By blaming the wife of the cheating spouse, and we're talking about Dr. Laura's husband's ex-wife, you know, the one he was married to when he began an affair with Dr. Laura... absolves Dr. Laura of all guilt.
Could this be the reason Dr. Laura shocked both the viewers and the staff of the Today Show by blaming Eliot Spitzer's wife as the reason as to why he cheated on her with high class call girls?
Is Dr. Laura attempting to excuse her past actions of serial adultery by "blaming the victim", her lover's then current wife?
Is Dr. Laura trying to absolve herself of feelings of guilt by placing the blame squarely on the wife, claiming the wife failed in her duties therefore the man had a right to go "outside" his marriage, to someone such as Dr. Laura, in order to be "fulfilled"?
If Eliot Spitzer had called in to Dr. Laura's radio talk show before everything fell apart, what "advice" would Dr. Laura had given Governor Spitzer?
Would she have advised him that wasn't really his, but was his wife's fault? That he had the right to go "elsewhere" to get his "needs" met?
Would she?
We'll let the reader be the judge.

Eliot Spitzer resigned this morning and it was revealed in the NY Post that the girl above could very well be the "Kristen" that FBI agents recorded Spitzer making a deal with on their wiretap.
It's been reported that the deal was consummated with an evening of attention from "Kristen" for $4300 from Spitzer.
And the New York governor's eventual resignation.

New York's voters are finding out what many financial figures discovered long before now: when Eliot Spitzer wants something, he's not going to let niceties stand in his way.
And Eliot Spitzer is finding out that New York voters think much about his latest attempt to strong-arm those with differing opinions.
Voters my dump Eliot Spitzer because of his license love for illegals immigrants. From the AP:
Spitzer certainly lived up to his billing about changing things. New Yorkers are only now finding out what his ideas for changing involved. If you were one of his earlier objects of attention in the financial world, you already knew.
Gov. Eliot Spitzer's plan to provide illegal immigrants with driver's licenses has sunk his favorability rating to an all-time low of 41 percent, and has left only 25 percent of voters planning to re-elect him, according to a poll the Siena Research Institute released Tuesday.
Forty-six percent had an unfavorable opinion of Spitzer, and 49 percent said they would "prefer someone else" as the next governor. Last month, 54 percent of voters had a favorable opinion of the governor.
"Eliot Spitzer's standing with voters has fallen faster and further than any politician in recent New York history," Siena spokesman Steven Greenberg said in a written statement. "Everything may not have changed on day one but from the voters' perspective, everything about Governor Spitzer changed in year one."
Spitzer swept to office last November with nearly 70 percent of the vote, carried largely by his reputation as a reformer and his campaign pledge to change everything starting on "Day One."
The New York Times now reports that Spitzer is dropping his whole license plan--at least for now.
Eliot Spitzer is used to telling a compliant media his ideas about his targets. And if his targets resisted his ideas, he'd use threats and bullyboy tactics.
Now that same media is telling Spitzer the voters' idea. He's didn't like it when he met resistance on the license issue.
He'll find that voters are a little harder to bully.

An unusual source for us, but Crooks and Liars has a post on Eliot Spitzer calling Lou Dobbs someone who "spews venom".
SPITZER: Look, I’m not going to demean myself by getting into a back and forth with somebody who on TV spews venom, hate and fundamental misinformation. Of course not. He knows it.As someone whose favorite tactic was releasing items about companies he was prosecuting to reporters, Spitzer should know a thing or two about spewing venom in the media. As NY Attorney General, Spitzer leaked information that could be spun unfavorably against the defendants by his office. He then browbeat companies into taking plea bargains to pad his kill record. His record against companies which stood up to his bullying tactics was less impressive.
As I said, it’s beneath me, it’s beneath my office, to, in any way, involve myself with Lou Dobbs. And I think his knowing spread of venom is beneath CNN as well.
As NY Governor, Spitzer is finding out that others are harder to bully.
