"Deceiver was steadily working this story long before the Times printed one word. All it takes is a one-sentence credit to avoid these things. Play fair."
New York Times' top researcher?
Will the New York Times be known the "Gray Shady Lady" before it becomes the "Gray Bag Lady"?
Today, Gawker takes notice of a disturbing rip-off: [Times Takes Edwards Scandal Info From Blogger Without Credit]
Yesterday the New York Times ran a story about the John Edwards affair, detailing the circumstances behind the meeting of Edwards and Rielle Hunter in a Beverly Hills hotel that ended up getting the ex-VP candidate caught by the National Enquirer. The story includes various bits of background info on Bob McGovern, a new-age friend of Hunter who set up the meeting. Just about all of that background appears to have been taken from a post more than a week earlier on Deceiver.com—although the Times didn't credit them at all. That's stealing.
The Mainstream Media has been getting ripped--well, by everyone, but the blogosphere, in particular--for not covering the John Edwards scandal until August 8, when it went from "it's not news" to "Hey, it's 24/7 news".
Now, the MSM is ripping off the bloggers, who along with the National Enquirer, were the only ones to cover the John Edwards scandal for months.
Yesterday, DBKP wrote about the theft of material from both here and website, Deceiver, by the MSM, and one of the reasons behind it.[Mainstream Media Uses Blogosphere as Unpaid Research Wing in Edwards Scandal - UPDATED]
Of course, the MSM wouldn’t have had to resort to these shady practices if just one of the members of their clubby community had investigated allegations surrounding John Edwards nine months ago: but that would’ve put a dent in the invitations to the wine-and-cheese parties.
The only investigation came from the National Enquirer and a few bloggers. But, you wouldn’t know it if you watched the Big Media frenzy of this past weekend. Some stories didn’t even mention the National Enquirer by name–it became an unnamed “tabloid”.
Gawker concludes it piece comparing the Times and Deceiver pieces:
"Deceiver was steadily working this story long before the Times printed one word. All it takes is a one-sentence credit to avoid these things. Play fair."
NOTE: If the MSM had taken Gawker's advice to "play fair" prior to August 8, they'd have no reason to steal now, trying to play catch-up.

I'm Trench Reynolds.
I blog about crime.
This is the DBKP Week in Crime for July 13th-July 19th, 2008.
This week at the newly redesigned craigscrimelist the story this week was about an Idaho man who was tried and convicted for using craigslist to try to rape someone. You won't believe what his defense was.
My favorite link that I posted at CrimeNe.ws this week was about how some police departments are using injections to subdue some suspects.
Things slowed down this week again at News of Doom but I did post an update to the Megan Williams torture case.
At MyCrimeSpace the story of the week was about Joseph Genovese Jr. He killed a woman while driving under the influence then basically bragging about it on MySpace. You won't believe this one.
At TheTrenchcoat Chronicles a man who threatened a Columbine investigator only received probation. Yet people wonder why there are so many repeat offenders.
And lastly the Bad Breeders story of the week was the search for 2-year-old Caylee Marie Anthony who has been missing for over a month but her mom never reported it.
If you want to follow all my sites there are three different ways. You can subscribe to my Twitter feed, or the RSS feed, or my Netvibes page.
That's it for this week. I'm Trench Reynolds for DBKP.
Here's hoping I don't blog about you.

July 6-July 12, 2008
I'm Trench Reynolds.
I blog about crime.
This is the DBKP Week in Crime for July 6th-July 12th, 2008.
I'm going to start out light this week with a story I posted at craigscrimelist. It was about a Florida government employee who was arrested for using craigslist to harass someone. What made it humorous is that I had a field day with his unfortunate name.
My favorite link that I posted at CrimeNe.ws was about an experimental crowd control device that has the tin foil hat crowd up in arms.
Business picked up at News of Doom and that's never a good thing. The most horrific story of the week was about an Oklahoma family who committed one of the worst cases of child abuse I've ever had the displeasure of posting about.
At MyCrimeSpace the conversation continued about the disappearance of Brooke Bennett especially with the revelation that the state of Vermont released her alleged abductor early.
At Psycho for Love I posted about an arrogant punk who gunned downed his girlfriend in front of witnesses and on surveillance tape but denied it.
At TheTrenchcoat Chronicles I posted about the revelations that came out this week about NIU gunman Stephen Kazmierczak.
And lastly the Bad Breeder of the week and possibly the year was an Ohio woman who did unspeakable things to her children.
If you want to follow all my sites there are three different ways. You can subscribe to my Twitter feed, or the RSS feed, or my Netvibes page.
That's it for this week. I'm Trench Reynolds for DBKP.
Here's hoping I don't blog about you.

DBKP Journeys to Center of the Weird News World
DBKP INTERVIEWS Fark founder, Drew Curtis, in which we find out about Fark past, present and future--and the squirrel.
Google "Weird News websites" and you get back over 1 million references. But veteran weird news junkies know they can always get their fix at FARK.com, the king of the off-beat news sites.
Drew Curtis is the pusher.
Founded in 1997, Fark.com churns out a never-ending stream of entertaining headlines about strange stories linked to an eclectic collection of sources: Reuters, CNN, ABC News, as well as blogs and local TV stations.
FAST FARK FACT:
It's not Fark, It's million of FARKers:
By January 2008, according to Curtis, the site received an estimated 62 million page views per month from 4 million unique visitors.
As an article in Rolling Stone put it:
When heavy rains flooded Dongting Lake in the Hunan province, CNN reported the event under the headline CHINA DESPERATE FOR BREAK IN THE WEATHER. But over at Fark.com, the best skewed news site on the Net, they ran the link with a different take: SWELLING DONGTING PRESSES AGAINST GROANING DIKE.
"For me, the tag line is more important than an article," says Fark founder Drew Curtis. "If the tag line is funny, it trumps everything else."
Just scanning those skewed headlines--prepared by Curtis and his crack team of smart-ass administrators--has the power to turn any reader into a conversational giant in most offices.
Okay, at least in our office.
A few headlines from the past week included:
RECENT FARK HEADLINES:
* "And the Daily Dumbass Award goes to: The drug-trafficking brothers who flagged down a police car by mistake, and are now on the run. On horseback. In Fiji"
--tagged "Dumbass" on YahooNews story
* "The intellectual path to atheism in a nutshell: "I rejected Christianity largely because it would not have allowed me to continue getting drunk and high every night while splitting time between four girlfriends."
--tagged "Obvious" on a story from Townhall.com
* "Convicted child molester claims he was molested by Bigfoot as a kid"
--tagged "Unlikely"
* "Britney Spears linked to rise of foreclosures. LEAVE BRITNEY A LOAN"
--tagged as "Amusing" on LA Times story

We've always had questions about FARK. Recently, DBKP's Mondoreb and LBG had a chance to sit down (in the blogosphere sense of the word) with Drew, who provided some answers.
And Curtis was candid.
MONDOREB: Welcome to DBKP, Drew. We've been looking forward to this chat, so let's do it.
DREW CURTIS: Cool. Sounds like fun.
MONDO: You would think everyone's heard of FARK, but they haven't. How would you descibe FARK to someone who is totally unaware of the website and how it operates?
DC: What if the Daily Show ran the Drudge Report?
We're a news aggregator selecting for humor. If that doesn't help anyone who is totally unaware of Fark, they need to get off the Internet.
MONDO: How many links does FARK get in an average day? Does it drive the administrators crazy? Does all the strange news links give them a skewed, jaded view of the world?
DC: 2500 [links per day], and the reason it's that low is because we reject duplicates. It doesn't drive us crazy per se. I don't have much of a jaded view either, I figure it's not that the world is getting stupider, it's that media coverage (of how stupid we already are) is better.
The thing that does drive me nuts though is when I pull up cnn.com or another "real" news site and see nothing but Fark articles. I feel the same way when I go to TGIFridays and try to find healthy food on the menu--there isn't any.
LITTLE BABY GINN: What's up with the super-masculine squirrel on the 404 page? Where'd he come from? It's rumored that he was the only thing on FARK for a couple years. Is he like a member of the family?
DC: It was completely random.
The day I reserved the Fark.com domain name in 1997, a friend of mine sent me that pic. I've since talked to the actual photographer, it's a real picture.
MONDO: Of all the entirely-strange and unusual stories on FARK over the years, what's the strangest one you remember?

DBKP.com - Bigger, Better!.
Death by 1000 Papercuts Front Page.

Death by 1000 Papercuts (DBKP) will ask the Washington office of the FBI tomorrow to investigate apparent threats against Israel posted on an anti-LGF Internet hate site.
DBKP is going to ask the FBI to probe what it sees is a terrorist group posing as a front organization and the threat they pose to both America and Israel.
"They're like a pack of rabid dogs," said DBKP editor Mondoreb, "If you saw a pack of wild rabid dogs filing suits and threatening people, you'd call the FBI too."
"DBKP will call the FBI PDQ on CAIR about LGF."
Mondo continued: "Just today on the CAIR website, one of the lead stories was about CAIR delivering 12,000 letters to Congress "calling for an end to Israel."
"CAIR is or was populated with convicted or unindicted terrorists," said DBKP's RidesAPaleHorse.
"We think having terrorist connections is a sign of hate."

From today's CAIR website:
CAIR said today it has collected and is delivering to Congress more than 12,000 letters calling for an end to Israel's "collective punishment" of Palestinian civilians in the Gaza Strip.
The DBKP threat to call the FBI came as a response to CAIR's calls to the FBI to investigate what CAIR felt were threatening comments on anti-Jihad website, Little Green Footballs.

"We were immediately going to contact the FBI when we saw the CAIR press release, but then we figured, the FBI has already investigated them and found connections to terrorists," said DBKP's Ginn.
"What's good's another call today? The FBI's probably already a ton of surveillance on CAIR already and another ton would just be overkill."
"So we'll call tomorrow."

Mondo continued that it was not only the CAIR website that prompted DBKP's action: an Internet photo that showed CAIR officials also had DBKP staff worried.
They (CAIR) "appeared foreign-looking in some pictures."
The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) today asked the St. Louis, Mo., office of the FBI to investigate apparent threats against a local mosque posted on an anti-Muslim Internet hate site.
Because of similar bias-related incidents and lawsuits by CAIR nationwide, DBKP is urging conservative individuals and institutions to review security procedures using advice contained in its "Conservative Community Safety Kit."
The kit should be ready for "worldwide Internet distribution later this week", commented Ginn.
"We're treating this CAIR business like a serious threat."
"This whole CAIR thing just creeps me out."

In case you didn't notice, we're making a few changes.
We're moving to a bigger site (we're still going to be having this one for awhile, then we'll re-direct to the new one.) and we'll be able to offer our readers a lot more at the new location.
This is sort of a preview of the new place, not a final edition. A test run, if you will for several items.
Look for new features, new writers and some surprises. LBG's got some things up her sleeve, RAPH's been positively prolific and has a new project that I'm excited about and I'm going on a worldwide tour opening for U2.
Okay, so the last one's not happening, but you know how easy it is to get carried away.
In the meantime, let's hope no one has a stroke.
And pray for the poor, overworked staff.
We drive them like Eskimo sled dogs.

From the above picture, some might guess our subject's to be the Op-Ed crew at the New York Times. Tempting, but it's a Sunday evening and after a hard day of slaving over a hot blog, we just wanted to give some shout outs for some Carnival shouts DBKP received today.
Dr. Sanity, over at Carnival of the Insanities put up 1st Round Action from the DBKP Ultimate Political Cage Match.
And therapydoc at Everyone Needs Therapy featured our Pixelaneous: Fantastic Sand Castles.
Two docs paying attention to us usually makes us nervous, but not these two.
Go see what they've collected. Not only will they be good for your head, they'll be good for the funny bone, too.

John Kerry’s Rapid Response Team has the goods SBVT, vows to be ready for 2012 elections.
How’s that for a fast reaction and “winning the news cycle?”
A mere 3 years after the election, John Kerry’s team has put together a bale of evidence, that were it not for his total non-involvement in the ‘08 Presidential election, would set forth a string of events, that if not unrelated, would surely land him in the Oval Office.
If only it had been a Time Machine instead of a Right Wing Smear Machine they used on him! Try rubbing the magic hat, John. Or borrow Mugabe’s Magic Staff (wink wink).

LITTLE BABY GINN: Well, I don't think it's the Clinton supporters. You know they're going to show. But it's a long way from Alaska to the Polit-O-Drome. Gravel might not have much of the crowd behind him here today.
MONDO: Gravel's supporters might not have much to cheer for: "The Invisible Man" is a decided underdog in today's match. Your referee today is once again Mayor Mikey Bloomberg of New York City. We're almost ready to go. Any last thoughts about today's matchup, Ginn?
GINN: Don't count Gravel out. He's solid and I think he'll bother Clinton from the Left. Expect him to throw a lot from that direction today.
MONDO: OK, buckle up! We're ready for this one to start up!
[DING! DING! DING!]
"INVISIBLE" Mike Gravel: We have to address the whole drug issue. I see no reason between marijuana and booze or alcohol, and there's no reason why you shouldn't be able to go to a liquor store and buy marijuana. It has recuperative powers.MONDO: Gravel starts out working high. I think that's bothering Clinton.

GINN: The Legal Drugs Dropkick always makes Clinton uncomfortable. She already looks winded.
MONDO: Then she could be in trouble because I don't think she inhales either.
Hillary "CACKLIN'" Clinton:GINN: Hillary comes up lame and now she's got Gravel in the clinches. She's not letting go.
We need diversion, like drug courts. Non-violent offenders should not be serving hard time in our prisons. They need to be diverted from our prison system. We need to make sure that we do deal with the distinction between crack and powder cocaine. And ultimately we need an attorney general and a system of justice that truly does treat people equally.

MONDO: She was smart to lock it up; Gravel mighta got her against the ropes on that one. Bloomberg steps between them and breaks it up. Is Gravel smiling? What's going on there?
GINN: He's taunting her, Mondo! Gravel's pointing and mocking her to try and hit him!
MONDO: He's showing some fire--and that seems to be confusing Clinton. The small band of Gravel supporters is going nuts!
"INVISIBLE" Mike Gravel:GINN: He's got her in an Unfair Crime Cruncher. I don't think she was expecting this Libertarian onslaught from the "Invisible Man"! Clinton's hurtin' for certain now. Mondo, we could have a 1st Round upset brewing!
Because so much crime is the product of people who were in prison, an obvious means of reducing crime is to drastically reduce our prison population. That can be done, at no danger to society, almost overnight. How? By eliminating a whole host of common social activities from the law's list of "crimes."
Common activities for which we now punish people--so-called "victimless-crimes" because they affect no one but the participant--include drinking, prostitution, gambling, homosexuality, use of certain drugs. What is the point of jailing people for these practices? What more towering hypocrisy, what more potent breeder of total disrespect for the law can there be than these "crimes," which are practiced by millions of citizens, but for which only a few are singled out for punishment?
Victimless crimes are a peril to our health only in so far as they are classified as crimes. Some 51% of criminal arrests in 1970 were for victimless crimes. We could very nearly empty our jails by abolishing them.

MONDO: Hillary's looking to her corner for help. Looks like Bill, her manager, is distracted by a Paris Hilton lookalike in the third row, Ginn.
GINN: That oughta fire her up, for sure.
Hillary "CACKLIN'" Clinton:MONDO: OH NO! She hit him with a low blow!
"Goddamn stupid fucking fool!"
"Stay the f**k back, stay the f**k away from me! Don't come within ten yards of me, or else!"GINN: Oh my God! Did you see that?!?! She did it again! Clinton hit Gravel low again and then threatened him! The "Invisible Man"'s hurt and hurt bad!
MONDO: I've never seen anything like it, Ginn! Two low blows in a row! That oughta be a point.
GINN: Thank God, the ref IS deducting a point from Clinton's score. And checking out Gravel. He's hurt, Mondo.
MONDO: Losing one point isn't going to help Gravel any if he can't continue.
Hillary "CACKLIN'" Clinton:
"Come on Bill, put your dick up! You can't f**k her here!!"
GINN: She's obviously upset with her manager. Somebody better get her calmed down or she's gonna get disqualified!
MONDO: Fat chance, Ginn, it happened right at the end of the round.
The Invisible Man WAS doing so well, too; he's still doubled over in pain from those two HARD low blows. I don't know if he's gonna come out for the last round.
GINN: Looks like Clinton's calming down. Gravel definitely does not look good.
"INVISIBLE" Mike Gravel:MONDO: Gotta hand it to Gravel: he's a gamer. He's not backing down, crippled crotch or not! He's trying to get Clinton in the Habeus Corpus Cross of Death!
During one of the debates I mentioned that my fellow Democratic candidates scare me. Hillary's speech last week to the Take Back America conference gives me yet another reason to be afraid.
In an indignant voice she decried the Bush administration's ''stunning record of secrecy and corruption, of cronyism run amok. . . It is everything our founders were afraid of, everything our Constitution was designed to prevent.'' Actually, our Constitution grants Congress the power to prevent these ills but Hillary and her colleagues weren't up to the task.
Our founders' legacy did not stop Hillary from voting for the Patriot Act and then supporting its renewal in 2006 despite revelations that the government was using it to infringe on the very liberties that our founders held sacred. Where was her commitment to our founders when she voted to gut our habeas corpus protections?
Huffington Post - June 25, 2007
Hillary "CACKLIN'" Clinton:GINN: Wow! Clinton puts him away with a roundhouse Patriot Punch to the head!
I despise terrorism and the nihilism it represents. Those helping terrorists would face the "wrath" of the US.

Mondo: Damn, Ginn. Gravel almost had her til she wrapped herself in the flag. Good defense by Clinton--and good offense, too! But everybody loves an underdog; "The Invisible Man" almost pulled a stunner here today. He just couldn't overcome those Clinton low blows. But you have to hand it to Hillary. She knew what she had to do to win and she got it done. I thought it would be hard to top the Giuliani-Hunter slugfest, but this was action-packed from the bell!

GINN: This one was certainly a treat for the casual fan of Ultimate Political Cage Match action. Looks like the judges' have a decision. And I'd like to remind our viewers that the judges decisions are FINAL!
[JUDGES DECISION: Hillary "CACKLIN" Clinton over Mike "INVISIBLE MAN" Gravel 2-0; one judge scored it a draw.]
GINN: Clinton's the winner! She'll take on the winner of Bill "Close Encounters" Richardson and "Judicial Joe" Biden in the Quarterfinals. That's it for this Round 1 action. Hillary came out on top. Be sure to be here for our next match: Mitt "The Maulin' Mormon" Romney vs Mike "The Heartless" Huckabee.
MONDO: Until then, have a safe trip back home and remember--the early bird gets the worm.

MONDOREB:Welcome to the DBKP Politodrome and today's Giuliani-Hunter 1st Round Match. It's a full house for DBKP Political Cage Match action. Scalpers were getting $400 a ticket outside the arena. That's $158.09 in 1980 dollars, in case you were thinking "tickets were a lot cheaper back in my day".
LITTLE BABY GINN:I was too young to count in 1980. I hadn't hit my prime yet. But the Mayor of Mayhem looks to be in his prime today--prime fighting shape. He really looks dangerous today, Mondo. "Dunkin' Death" Hunter is a decided underdog, but look for him to hammer Giuliani on the social issues. If Rudy has a weak spot, that'd have to be it.
MONDO: The referee today is Mayor Mikey Bloomberg of New York City. Bloomberg was originally scheduled to be a Cage Match participant, Ginn, but as you know, came in heavy at the weigh-ins and didn't make the weight.
GINN: I talked to someone in the Bloomberg entourage this morning. They said the mayor's problems stemmed from one too many waffles.
MONDO: Oh ho! Waffles? It'll be interesting to see the Clinton weigh-in tomorrow. We're just about ready here for the first round to begin.
[DING! DING! DING!]
DUNKIN' DEATH Hunter:MONDO: Hunter starts with an illegal alien punch.
Illegal aliens continue to funnel directly into many of our local communities and adversely impact our way of life by overwhelming our schools, inundating our health care system and, most concerning, threatening our safety.
The MAYOR Of MAYHEM Guiliani:GINN: The Mayor slips the punch and catches DD in a Safe City Scissor. Wow! What footwork!
I had 400,000 illegal immigrants, roughly, in NYC. And I had a city that was the crime capital of America. I didn't have the luxury of political rhetoric. So I said: If you are an illegal immigrant in NYC & a crime is committed against you, I want you to report it. My policies led to a city that was the safest large city in the country, so they must have been sensible policies.

DUNKIN' DEATH Hunter:Ginn: Rudy's hit and he's hit hard! Hunter fires off a Human Life Haymaker and catches the Guiliani squarely in the stomach! The mayor might be in trouble here. It looks like he's having trouble breathing!
"If I have a judicial candidate in front of me who can look at a sonogram of an unborn child and not see a valuable human life, I will not appoint that candidate to the federal bench."
Mondo: Not as much trouble as a 2nd-term fetus, Ginn.
The MAYOR Of MAYHEM Guiliani:Mondo: Giuliani got out of trouble, but he's still hurt.
I believe the best way we can have common ground in this debate that you're hearing is if we put our emphasis on reducing abortions and increasing the number of adoptions, which is something that I did as mayor of New York City. But I think ultimately that decision that has to be made is one that government shouldn't make. Ultimately, a woman should make that with her conscience and ultimately with her doctor.
Source: 2007 GOP Iowa Straw Poll debate Aug 5, 2007
Ginn: Yeah, Hunter's gotta be feeling pretty good now; he's still in this thing.
DUNKIN' DEATH Hunter:MONDO: Hunter's going for it all! The Gay Pride Pretzel! Rudy's gotta be thinking this is a drag!
In September 2007 I voted "Yes" for a bill in which schools forfeit funds if they expose kids to gay propaganda."
The MAYOR Of MAYHEM:GINN: A stunning comeback! Giuliani pulls off a Religious Icon Kamikaze! Truly magnificent!
My decision to reduce funding for the Brooklyn Museum of Art after it
displayed sexually explicit cutouts and a portrait of the Madonna defiled with elephant dung was hysterically opposed by the New York elite. The politically correct never envisioned that people could in good faith have a difference of opinion about whether public money ought to be used to desecrate a religious image. There was an important First Amendment issue at stake. I believed that the mayor should never have the right to stop anyone from making a statement of any kind. People have a right to free expression. If they were to create offensive art on their own property, using their own funds, and someone were to attack them for doing it, the mayor would
be obliged to protect them, and so would the police. But I believe there is a difference between protecting someone's right to desecrate a religious image and being required to fund that desecration using tax dollars from the very people it offends.

Mondo: I have to agree, Ginn. Everybody loves an underdog and Hunter showed surprising power here today. But you have to hand it to Rudy. His ability to slip Hunter's big punches was key. Still, it has to be closer than most people expected.
GINN: And now the judges' decision and I'd like to remind our viewers that the judges decisions are FINAL![JUDGES DECISION: Rudy "The Mayor of Mayhem" Giuliani" over Duncan "Dunkin' Death" Hunter 2-1]
GINN: Rudy the winner! He'll take on the winner of Mitt "The Maulin' Mormon" Romney and Mike "The Heartless" Huckabee in the Quarterfinals. That's it for this Round 1 action. Rudy came out on top. Be sure to be here for our next match: Hillary "Cacklin'" Clinton vs. "Invisible" Mike Gravel.
MONDO: Until then, have a safe trip back home.
